HUGE LOSSES. ECONOMY PROPOSALS. United Press assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. PARIS, August 12. The deficit on the French railways for 1930 was £14,500,000, and, Judging by the half-year's returns, it will be £21,500,000 in 1931. In order to place the lines on an economic basis it is proposed to raise the fares by 25 per cent., to close many stations, and abolish certain local lines, substituting motor-omni-buses or light motor vehicles which will use the railway lines.
