RIOTS IN BERLIN.
FIERCE STREET FIGHTS. HEAVY CASUALTIES REPORTED. PANIC-STRICKEN POPULACE. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright BERLIN, August 12. Street fighting has been resumed by the Communists, one of whom was critically wounded by a policeman who was sniping from a housetop. A threat to murder the police commander was painted on tile roadway at Weissensee.
Revolver shots which were fired during a torchlight procession at Cologne started serious rioting, in which the Communists engaged, necessitating police Intervention. The police fired high, in order to scatter the rioters, some of whom replied with revolvers.
The casualties are not yet. known, but are believed to be heavy. Many arrests were made, but the firing continues.
The public is in a state of terror, but the police say the situation this morning is in hand.
