FEDERAL JUDGES.
REDUCTION IN SALARIES. THREE AGREE; THREE DECLINE. CONTRARY TO CONSTITUTION. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. SYDNEY, August 12. The Prime Minister, Mr J. H. Scullin, wrote to the High Court Judges and Invited them to volunteer to accept a 25 per cent, reduction in their salaries. The Chief Justice, Sir Frank Oavan Duffy, and Justices Starke and Evatt have declined, but have expressed their willingness to forgo the £4 4s a day travelling allowance when away from their own States. The other three Judges agreed to the salary cut. The objectors’ reason was that they were not prepared to weaken that section of the Constitution which provides that nothing must be done to diminish Judges’ salaries during their continuance in office.
