NGARUAWAHIA BOROUGH.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. FIRE BRIGADE MATTERS. At the meeting of the Ngaruawahia Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr 11. J. Sampson), Crs. W. Paterson, J. S. Johnston, S. S. Saulbrey,? R. Eyre, A. Watts and the town clerk (Mr 11. B. Fraser). Cr. Paterson said that after conferring with the superintendent of the Fire Brigade he found that adequate arrangemens had been made for auxiliaries in the event of a lire during working hours. The superintendent of the brigade waited upon the council regarding the continued practice of certain persons smoking inside the hail and in close proximity to the draperies. He suggested that for a little extra charge on the hire of the hall a fireman could be put on duty at all public functions in the hall. It was pointed out that the persons hiring the hall were responsible to see that the by-law prohibiting smoking in the Public Hall was adhered lo and that the caretaker was present as representative of the council, was empowered to report offenders l'or prosecution. Traffic Inspection. A letter was received from the Waikato Council enclosing a statement of accounts of the traffic inspection for the past five months. The borough’s share of ihe expense amounted lo £8 7s (id. Or. Paterson pointed out that there were no credits shown from local prosecutions. It was explained lliul
such moneys had not yet been paid in by the Justice Department.—lt was resolved to pay the account. Miscellaneous. Permission was granted to the Easter Camp Association to use the Town Hall during Easter on the same terms as for last year. An invitation was received from the Hon. Minister of Justice for the council to attend the opening of the new Courthouse at Hamilton. 'the Hamilton Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club wrote asking for the use of a ground on which to hold an athletic meeting on Marcli 21. The club was desirous of showing their appreciation of Ihe support given to the association by Ngaruawahia members. —Club to be offered the use of either Paterson Park or the cricket ground if available on date mentioned. Farm Lands in Borough. Mr Feeney wrote, on behalf of a client, applying for the council to pass a resolution to the effect that a certain section in the- borough was farm land and not •likely to lie used for building purposes for some time to come.—'Pile formal resolution was passed in respect to this application and also in respect lo an application made lately regarding another section in the borough. Unemployment Relief. The council discussed at length Ihe question of employing men on relief work under scheme f>. It was pointed out that the scheme provided sustenance work only, but did not prevent men engaged on relief work from private sources on off days. It was also pointed out that the scheme did not allow for the insurance of workers which would have lo be done by Ihe body employing them. Cr. He considered that the unemployed men of the borough should be employed on work within the borough At present they were working for the Raglan County, which reaped the benefit, while the townspeople paid their share towards the fund which was being spent on relief work. Cr. Eyre supported Cr. Watts and suggested that the town should be cleared of noxious weeds. The council resolved to follow the suggestion of Cr. Eyre and the matter was left in Hie hands of the Unemployment Committee.
