RATES FOR DRAINAGE.

ACREAGE BASIS. NEVER FULLY TRIED OUT, COMMENT BY THE MINISTER. In his announcement, regarding a conference on matters in connection with the Taupiri swamp area, to be held in Hamilton on Thursday next and at which Mr. A. G. Harper will be present on behalf of the. Government, the Minister, Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, writes regarding the proposal to rate on an acreage basis: “As I have already indicated, this subject was given prominence in the various communications sent to me, and I gather it was also prominent at ratepayers' meetings held to discuss the question. . I can assure those concerned that I will be very pleased to go fully Into any proposals which they make concerning the adoption of this system of rating, but at the same time, I think it only right to point out that the system is a comparatively new and untried one as far as this Dominion is concerned and it is only fair that those advocating the system should be able to indicate that they have studied carefully the effect of it and should be able to show that it will not act detrimentally to the carrying out of drainage works and river protection in the district concerned.’’

The Minister expressed the hope that the conference would be successful and that as a result of the discussions a more unanimous feeling would be obtained than perhaps had been the case in the past. Mr. ,T. A. Young, M.P. for Hamilton, has been advised that the Minister hopes that all persons interested in the proposals will attend and fully express their views, and bring forward such facts as they deem advisable.
