FRUITFUL'TOUR.

■ UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD. FIRST-HAND STUDY. CONTACT WITH PRACTICAL MEN. After a week’s interval, during which members made individual visits to many parts of the Dominion, tile Unemployment Board resumed its meetings at Wellington this week. The main purpose of the tours was to gain first-hand knowledge regarding the work carried out under the board's various schemes. A further reason that induced them to visit the provincial centres and the highways and byways where'work is being done under one or other of the schemes was the desire personally to explain to local authorities the details of the latest of the board’s proposals, and to get the opinions of the practical men composing these local bodies. The tour has proved most satisfactory from every point of view. The members have returned with a thorough comprehension of the unemployment position in all localities and a fuller realisation of the various phases of the problem. Their talks with local body and local committee members, farmers and others have given them the perspective of the employers of those who are' concerned with the board’s schemes, which will be a valuable aid in devising future relief plans. Members briefly reported the salient facts connected with their individual tours, and revealed during the recital some very interesting details of the manner in which . the relief plans had met the situation. Without exception, the members of the board were everywhere received most cordially, and they found that members of local bodies showed an intelligent interest in the work of the board.
