ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS. “Wager,” Ngaruawahia.— (1) R. McTavish rode Hyde Park when the latter won the Franklin Cup last season. (2) Count Cavour won the Dunedin Cup in 1926. “Inquirer,” Hamilton—Finmark (1918) was the last two-year-old to win the Taranaki Stakes prior to Ammon Ra's success in the event on Saturday. “Breeding,” Morrinsville. —Impetuous, a winner at New Plymouth on Saturday, is a three-year-old lllly by Limond—Pennon. W. Rayner trains her at Wanganui lor Mr G. M. Currie.

GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS. The Wanganui Jockey Club will race m Thursday and Saturday. The annual meeting of the Dargaville Racing Club will be held or Thursday and Saturday. The Auckland Trotting Club will race at Alexandra Park on Saturday. The Kaikoura Trotting Club's annual meeting will be held on Saturday. The Canterbury Jockey Club will carry out a programme at Riccarton on Saturday. To-morrow the Tolaga Bay Raoing Club will conduct its annual gathering. Llanore should prove ■ equal to a good, showing -in the Cup at Dargaville to-morrow. The Pershore mare has been working well on the tracks. Sleipner has left H. Nurse’s stable and is now being trained by C. Emerson at Riccarton. So far he has been a sad disappointment. Black-Duchess will find some favour in the Maiden Handicap at Wanganui to-morrow. She has a reputation in private of being a speedy sort. Paganelli was brought back to Frankton yesterday by his trainer, M. J. Carroll, after his racing at the Taranaki meeting. Titanette, who acted as runner-up to Columba in two-year-old company at Rotorua, is a brown filly by Valkyrian from Titaness, the latter of whom figured with some success in provincial racing in her day. Titanette finished with plenty of courage each time and this filly should pay her way. The provision of the 5s totalisador at the Taranaki meeting was a popular move, according to reports from New Plymouth. One of the most consistent, but also unluckiest, geldings that has raced for some time is Joyspear. He never runs a bad race, but just fails to secure the best part of the prize. Leasehold, who is now being trained at Te Rapa, was raced each of tha two days at Rotorua. The Acre—Elinore gelding showed speed each time, but he failed to run the mile right out. Leasehold had been somewdiat disappointing since his win at the Thames meeting, but his latest efforts were quite fair. Atereria, who Is engaged in the Westmere Hurdles at Wanganui to-morrow was formerly trained at Te Awamutu. The Rossendale gelding has not displayed much prominence as a jumper, but he has a handy weight to-morrow. Sub-Editor , who had' previously finished second in the Highweigfit Handicap on opening day, registered a sound win in the Ohinemulu Hack Cup at Rotorua on Monday. The way was made easier for the Surveyor— Bunty colt by a run on the fence after turning for home but he would have won in any case. Sub-Editor is very well just now and the racingahead should find him prominent in his grade. Etehi Rangi and Glena Bay, members of M. J. Carroll’s team, will be racing at the Dargaville meeting. Etehi Rangi’s engagements to-morrow are the Maiden Handicap and Awakino Handicap, while Glena Bay figures in the Cup. 0. Mclnally, who has taken the horses north, will ride them. Honiton won the Tourist Handicap, the sprint event on the opening day at Rotorua, in attractive style. The Marble Arch —Lacemaker filly, who was turned out in good order by J. Paul, had to resist a challenge by Refresher in the final stages, but she held it off very freely to score by a length. Honilon was going well in the Borough Handicap on Monday wiien, after meeting with a set-back during the running, she had an attack of bleeding. After giving the matter careful consideration. the stewards of the Woodvilie District Jockey Club decided to 1 carry on with ttie race meeting on | February 25 and 20. Although the ' ■times are out of joint, the stewards i fell t.lucre was a duty owing to owners and to trainers and others dependent on racing for their livelihood, and that "business as usual” was probably the best policy at the present time. i

Chopin is under 15 hands high, yet he holds his own amongst quite good class handicap performers. If taken across to Sydney this son of Lord Quex would make his presence fell in some of the cups confined to ponies.

•Standfast appears to have lost some of the dash he displayed in his racing earlier in the season. The Valkyrian—Unity gelding was not capable of making any serious impression on bis fields in the Cup and the President’s Handicap at Rotorua.

In the Shade is to have his next start in the Earle Stakes at Wanganui to-morrow. The Australian Sun gelding finished third in Ihe Cup at New Plymouth last week, after being very unlucky in the running. It is a weak field to-morrow and In the Shade will be well supported.

Marechal was third in the Hot Springs Handicap at Rotorua on Saturday and occupied a similar position in the Electric Handicap on Monday. This four-year-old chestnut gelding is owned by Mr G. Paul, of Te Awamutu and trained by J. Paul. Marechal, who is by General Latour from Sibford, is a half-brother to Awarere, a useful sprinter in the same stable.

Ballachulish is an acceptor for the Cup and the Hobson Handicap at Dargaville. The Kilboy—Matatane gelding, who is a member of W. Stone’s team at Te Awamutu, has been off the scene for a time. He returned to racing at Pirongia and Ngaruawahia meetings, running second to First Lap in the Cup at the latter centre.

Silene carried useful support in her three starts in the hack class at the Rotorua meeting. The best she could do was to run fourth in the Waimangu Stakes and the Flying Stakes on the first and second days respectively. The Gyllene filly is small, but she has pace and should develop useful form as time goes on.

Miss Lap, who contested haok events at the Rotorua meeting, is a nicely turned three-year-old filly by Lapidary from Dido. She is owned by her trainer, S. C. McKay, of Waharoa. Miss Lap. is. green -to racing bt she showed speed when fully under way and gives promise of developing along useful lines.

High Pitch, after winning in bold style at eight furlongs and a half at the Matamata meting, was expected to take a hand in the settlement of the Cup at Rotorua. In Saturday’s race the Sarchedon—Shrill gelding was unable to hold on to the pace set by the lighter-weighted brigade and he was well back throughout the running. He was not started on Monday.

Steady Fire contested four races at the Rotorua meeting, where he had a second each day, his mos't effective effort being to finish within a length of Sir Russell in the 'Borough Handicap, the open sprint on Monday. The Campfire—Lady Rona gelding was turned out in good order for the weekend racing and he looks like doing further service for his Gordonton owner-trainer, F. Wood.

Musquin, who was second to Valcuir in the Okoroire Handicap at the Matamata meeting, contested highweight events at Rotorua. On the first day he did not make prompt progress from barrier despatch and although he improved in the middle stages of the race he faded out in the run home. In similar class on Monday,- Musquin was always in the picture, running second to Cristobel, but there was no dividend return with 'five starters. Musquin, who is in B. 3. Paterson’s team and is trained at Te Rapa, is speedy and the Quin Abbey gelding can be marked off as likely to improve.

Prince Val was beaten in sprint company at the Rotorua meeting, but he had no luck in the running either day. In the Tourist Handicap, in which he was third to Honiton and Refresher on Saturday, Prince Val got into bother as the field jumped off which cost him valuable ground. He was second into the straight, but too much use had been made of him. He was fourth in the Borough Handicap on Monday afler losing a lot of ground through being side on as the lever was released.

Smithfleld carried good support in highweight company on the two days at Rotorua. The Shambles—Sleepy Head three-year-old did not have the best of matters in the running on Saturday when he was third. AL his succeeding start, Smithfleld was fairly beaten into third place in weaker company. lie did noL give the impression, when he was paraded on Monday, that he had been improved by his first day outing.

Cristobel, although she was outside a place in highweight company on the first day at Rotorua, made quite a good showing as she was one of the pacemakers for over seven furlongs of the mile. That the race improved Cristobel, was indicated on Monday, when she led the field home in similar company. The Quin Abbey—Bell Crispin four-year-old has a lot to recommend her on breeding. She is now a member of N. J. Prenter’s team at Paeroa.

Valcuir has won two races in as many starts. The Yalkyrian—Lady Cuirassier gelding came back to racing at Matamata, at which meeting lie won the Okoroirc Hajuiicap of eiglit furlongs and a half, liis ready success on that occasion warranted Vaieuir being, as iie was, first, favourite for the High weight Handicap at Rotorua on Saturday. The .Matamata trained gelding readily provhd equal to llie dcmnn is. Vahuiir ran lie improved slill fur!her. He is trained by W. Casey at .Matamata for the district owner, .Mr C. Casey. i
