SEVERE GALE

70 MILES PER HOUR. DAMAGE DONE AT AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Saturday. A gale of exceptional severity swept Auckland this morning. Squalls reached a velocity of 70 miles an hour. A big petrol tank partly built collapsed. It was secured by steel wires but the bolts fastening thick iron plates were torn away, and the huge cylinder gave way. A large portion of a roof was torn off a motor body building works. A portion of the roof GOft by 40ft overhung the footpath, broke telegraph wires and fused a power cable. In the harbour the auxiliary schooner Piri dragged her anchor until a harbour tug toWed her to a wharf.

Much damage was done to gardens and orchards, particularly among tomatoes.
