WHALING IN ANTARCTIC

COMMITTEE INVESTIGATES. NEW ZEALAND INTERESTED. tinted Press Assn.—nee. Tei. Copyright. LONDON, Oct. 23. New Zealand by reason of her control of the Ross Dependency is closely attending the committee dealing with the Antarctic. Hitherto the discussion has centred on the dangers of exterminating whales by the modern methods by which whalers are now virtually whale-process factories. Formerly the whales had to be taken to port for handling and oil extraction, but the whole process is now carried out aboard the whalers. The Norwegians own the majority of the whalers, and Britain is the only other operator. The conference committee is carefully examining the draft of the International Whaling Convention as drawn up by the League of Nations, which Britain and Norway equally are. anxious to make effective and ratify. It had been anticipated that the United States might claim some portion of the uninhabitable Antarctic no-man’s-land on which Rear-Admiral Byrd landed, but no claim has been forthcoming.
