SHAMELESS MODES.

ARCHBISHOP’S FEARS. THE NEED FOR MODESTY. “Christian modesty should take a firm stand -against the shameless fashions that violate propriety and victimise the rising generation.” That outspoken comment was made by Archbishop Kelly, who returned to Sydney by the Orvieto, from a tour abroad, including Rome and his native Ireland. “Paris regulates the fashionable models,” he said, “and although the present ones are shameless they may become even w-orse. We should take a stand against them, for since the fall of our first parents grace has been given us as a necessary help to self-respect and social decorum. “Modesty is the fence of virtue, and without modesty there can he no virtue.”

Archbishop Kelly expressed his -agreement with the remarks of Mr McMahon, S.M., regarding the evil of women drinking in hotels.

Speaking on his trip, he said he paid two visits to Rome and had several audiences with the Pope, who was in splendid health considering his 73 years and the heavy amount of work he had to perform. Pope’s Blessing. Archbishop Kelly gave the following special blessing from the Pope to the people of Australia: — “I rejoice in the good accounts I have received from your far country. I, have noted with pleasure the progressive work in religion, education, and charity. I hope for a greater future for your land, which is a great Christian Commonwealth. You have my blessing always.” In Rome Archbishop Kelly met many friends of his student days. He also visited Carthage and found good progress was being made in religion. Dole Criticised, Archbishop Kelly was disappointed to find, the dole in operation in Ireland. It was bad for men to be paid for being idle, he said, and the money should be spent in establishing industry. He visited his native county, Wexford, and saw the graves of his ancestors, the tombstone of one bearing the date 1640. The party was accorded a warm welcome home by leading members of the Church.
