“SEARCH FOR TRUTH.”

OUTCOME OF LECTUREB. FARMERS’ NEW ATTITUDE. “Farmers’ minds have been broadened and they think of more than cows and the price of, butterfat," a farmer told Mr F. B. Stephens, tutororganiser of the Waikato branch of the Workers’ Educational Association recently. Reporting at the annual meeting of the association at Hamilton last evening, Mr Stephens stated that following the lectures given on Bernard Shaw in a country district the farmer in question mentioned that many of ,the. 1“good” people had ceased 'to hide their eyes from the social evils of the day and were keen to inculcate the aim of the “search for truth” into the minds of their young people. Such a change of mind, said Mr Stephens, was- most encouraging, especially among country folk. In another district a high compliment was paid the movement when the spokesman at a final meeting told Mr Stephens that his lectures had made them think. Mr Stephens considered that it was in this attitude towards life that the movement had justification rather than in the dissemination of knowledge per se. Another pleasing feature has been the very marked increase in the standard of 1 discussion,” added Mr Stephens. “The general attitude of reverential belief in the tutor’s words has almost gone and in its place has come the capacity to weigh evidence and to reject old shibboleths. With •sudh an |atUoude standard v$ work has been definitely higher.”
