In a collision with a motor-car while he was cycling, Mr Walter Madden, aged 77, a retired schoolmaster, of Otahu-hu, received injuries to his hip. An adjustment of the difficulty was made during the day and work .is to be resumed this morning. An offer to sell a male elephant, 12 years old, for the Auckland Zoo„has been received by the Auckland City Council from the municipal authorities at Hobart. A reply has been sent and it is probable that the animal will be purchased. The Hamilton Borough Council decided last evening that tenders are to be called immediately for the sanitary collection service, and that the attention of occupiers, the inspector and the contractor be called to the fact that refuse collection tins are not required to be placed in the front of buildings, and that they are not to be left on the footways or any portion of the streets.

An excellent story was told by Mr F. A. de la Mare against Mr F. B. Stephens, local tutor-organiser, at the annual meeting of the Waikato,branch of the Workers’ Educational Association last night. Mr Stephens had given an interesting lecture on Empire Free Trade to a meeting of farmers, said tiie speaker. The chairman, on rising to thank the lecturer, remarked: “Well, gentlemen, before this lecture t thought 1 knew something about free trade; d now find 1 know nothing.” (Laughter).

Cases brought to-the notice of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce show that the Railway Department is reducing its rates on certain lines to such an extent that the business cannot be profitable to the department. It was decided that the chamber protest against unfair competition by the Railway Department with existing transport services by offering to carry goods at uneconomic rates, thus depriving the New Plymouth Harbour Board and similar bodies of revenue without any benefit to the Railway Department.
