DAY BY DAY.

The interest shown in the subject matter of our article Equality under this heading is of evinced in a letter we Sacrifice, publish in another column from • the pen of Mr F.G. Dalziell, the well-known barrister and publicist, of Wellington. Mr Dalziell’s contribution puts the matter from a slightly different point of view. Our correspondent’s philosophical outlook may sometimes produce obscurity among those not trained to his method, but in dealing with the practical application of his theories he is invariably illuminating. In this case by a statement of our social relationship in the simplest terms he helps us to catch a glimpse of society in a light which throws into correct perspective the machinery and the thing itself. Is society living for the machine, or is the machine living for society? Mr Dalziell recalls us to the bedrock facts of social life, and asks us whether in our “family meine” the secret of happiness and contentment is not co-operation in the common cause. As soon as this great fact is seen in all its totality equality of sacrifice will need no preacher and no prophet. The only question will be, how best to provide the means of assessing the distributon of burden. Mr Voider has suggested one possible, and, as we think, one feasible, method.
