THE FILM TAX.

CONCESSION BY GOVERNMENT / TAKE OFF FOOTAGE DUTY. (By Telegraph.—rress Association.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Referring to the film hire taxation during the debate on the Finance Bill in the House of Representatives this morning, the Acting-Prime . Minister said the Government would consent to take .off the present footage dfity tO: facilitate' a settlement of the hold-up that had arisen as a result of the protest of the distributing companies against the new film hire tax. It was also willing to review this tax in all its aspects after it had been in operation for a reasonable period, and if it was found to be difficult to operate, or for any other reason unsuitable, the necessary amendments would be made next session.

At the same time, said Mr Ransom, the Government was willing to consider any other alternative method of ad valorem taxation that might be more acceptable to the industry generally. He hoped these proposals would be acceptable to the distributing companies, but if they persisted in the hold-up the Government would have to take strong measures in the interests of exhibitors and the public.
