FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. ROUTINE BUSINESS. The following inward correspondence was dealt with at the fortnightly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council lasl evening, the Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, presiding. Horotlu Abattoirs. The Auckland Farmers' Freezing Co. requested a meeting between representatives of the Company and the Borough Abattoir Committee, to lay before it certain facts in connection with carrying on abattoir work at Horotiu." The request of the New Zealand, branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society for a donation was acceded to, the Council deciding to grant the sum of £2O. *■' The Mayor 'remarked that cancer was a great scourge the world over, and a universal attempt was being made to find a‘way of dealing with it. It was a baffling disease and one that came close to many people in the district. , Street Crossings. The Hamilton Afidney of the Auckland Automobile Association wrote expressing appreciation of the white markings at pedestrian street crossings, but pointed out that women with prams were sometimes unable quickly to get clear of the road owing to the difficulty of getting the pram over the kerb. The agency suggested that the kerbs be dished as was done at the corner of Ward Street and Seddon Road. - The matter was referred to the borough engineer to report on, the Mayor remarking that it was quite a good idea. General. The rescrimming and repapering of two rooms at the borough gas engineer’s house was- approved of. A license was granted ,an Auckland applicant to use part of a building as a miniature golf green. Permission was granted to the Hamilton Boxing/ Association to hire certain forms belonging to the borough at a cost of £ ! 2 plus cartage. The application of the South Auckland Caledonian Society for use of the Horse Bazaar for its annual meeting in case of rain was deferred for a fortnight. An application from the Franlcton sub-committee of the Plunket' Society to hold a street stall in Frankton on November 4 was granted, the question of locality being left in the hands of Cr. B. Id. Andrews.

The application of Mr W. H. Holtby to transfer his taxi from the Hamilton Hotel stand 'to the Garden Place one for business reasons was granted. The Mayor explained that this would mean one taxi less at the Hamilton Hotel stand, and that no taxi could take its place.

A donation of £2 2s to the Frankton Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was agreed to.

Community Lighting

The following recommendations of the General Purposes Committee were agreed to:—That the balance of the community lighting in Victoria Street and the south side of Collingwood Street be completed as fittings become available,, the next-lot of tenders to be called to be for the lots, Mrs Jones to the Bank of New Zealand, South side of Collingwood Street and Collingwood Street to Garden Place; and that the Hamilton East block from Clyde to Cook Streets be considered when the main portion of the town is in hand. The tender of Messrs Oldham and Co. (£72 4s fid) for community lighting at the Hamilton Hotel was accepted.
