CROWN LANDS.
CAMBRIDGE DOMAIN. > ANNUAL MEETING. FINANCES IMPROVED. The annual meeting of the Cambridge Domain Board was held on Thursday. Those present were Messrs S. Lewis (chairman), C. H. Priestly, G. M. Watt, J. Hooker, A. W. Gane and the secretary (Mr Walter Stopford). Mr S. Lewis was unanimously ror elected chairman, and Mr G. M. Watt was appointed deputy-chairman. Mr Lewis, in returning thanks, said he thought it would be appreciated that the Domain had been well maintained, and the interest of tenants on Domain lands had been well cared for. Mr Lewis referred to the discouraging attitude taken Tip by the Borough Council and the Waikato County Riding in regard to the board’s permanent improvement scheme. The balance-sheet showed that the year had co'mmenced. with an overdraft of £231 18s 5d and concluded with an overdraft of £156 13s lid. The main item of inome was rents, £5Bl 10s. The chairman said he considered the balance-sheet highly satisfactory. The finances of the Board had improved, and the domain had been well maintained. Lighting Domain. Mr Lewis said he was keen that there should be more lights in the Domain. He considered that as the Domain was practically a thoroughfare for the residents along Thornton Road, the borough should assist in a better lighting scheme. Mr Hooker said that they should approach the Power .Board to assist in the matter of lighting. • The chairman said Mr Hooker’s idea was a good one but he thought it should be promoted by the Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr Priestly) said that extra lights had been put in the Domain and the Council had assisted. The secretary said that extra lights had been erected on Thornton Road. Lighting now cost the borough £2BO a year. He was prepared to ‘approach the Power Board* on the matter. The lighting of the streets and Domain was off peak load, and he thought the Board would treat them reasonably. The Mayor congratulated the Board on the state of its finances. There had been permanent improvements made in the upper portion of the Do- . main. The concrete kerbing was a great benefit, and he thought it a wise policy to extend the kerbing along the footpaths. He was not in favour of a big improvement scheme at the present time. The Council would gladly assist the Board provided it did not mean having to levy an extra rate for the purpose. The chairman said that, while thanking the Mayor for his congratulations, he felt that his remarks rather left him “up in. the air.’’ Words of assistance were all well enough, but the speaker would have liked something more tangible. He had been greatly disappointed at the reception of the improvement scheme. They could do with financial assistance, and he did think that at least the rates from Domain lands would have been handed over to the Board. Sports in Domain. Mr Hooker said he considered the sports bodies using the Domain grounds should be urged to contribute something to the Board. He thought the Bowling Club should'be approach-, ed. Mr Priestly supported the contention of the previous speaker. The chairman: “If we expect assistance from the .Bowling Club, then all should assist. It is not fair to discriminate.” It was finally resolved that the chair-, man and Mr Priestly be authorised to interview the sports bodies to ascertain what they would be prepared to contribute.
