AUSTRALIAN ELEVEN.

DERBYSHIRE MATCH. AUSTRALIANS MAKE 348. FONSFORD SCORES 131. United Press Assn. —Elcc. Tel. Copyright. (Received May 23, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, May 22. The Australian cricketers in the first innings of their match with Derbyshire scored 348 runs. Stumps were- then drawn. Scoring six short of 300 runs for to-day’s play the Australians did well, as there were several adjournments owing to rain and the bowling was never loose. Ponsford and Jackson scored at a fast rate, recording 100 for the opening partnership for the first time on the tour. The second 50 took 35 minutes. Jackson, who 'hit both Slater and Mitchell for sixers, was very dashing to-day. Ponsford was aggressive and Bradman also attacked t'he bowling. Derbyshire’s total was passed with nine wickets still intact. The Bowlers Handicapped. The greasy ball handicapped the bowlers and Ponsford scored boundaries in all directions until he was caught at cover. He hit 18 fours. Kippax, Richardson and McCabe were unimpressive and were dismissed after scraping ■ together a few runs. 'The crowd cheered when Fairfax was bowled after a dismal hour’s batting.
