Johnson, Otago hop, step and jump champion, will be a member of the New Zealand team at-the British Empire Games, the New Zealand Council having granted him permission to compete providing he pays his own expenses. Britain’s defence of amateur sport triumphed at the meeting of the International Athletic Federation, when a Finnish and Swedish motion seeking I to establish the principle of broken time payment, was rejected,by 18 votes to four. / Barnard, on behalf of Britain, said lie would withdraw from the federation if the proposals -were carried. Sport must be conducted for sport’s sake, not allowing payment to any Olympic member or international competition for loss of time and wages. AUSTRALIA’S TEAM. HURDLER--NOT AVAILABLE. Moorhouse, the Canterbury swimmer, has decided not to go to the Empire Games, lor business reasons.
