WHAT HOLLYWOOD WEARS

SPRINGTIME FASHIONS FOR EASTER. LACE AND WAISTS IN VOGUE. (Specially written for the Waikato Times by Mabel Baker.) HOLLYWOOD, April 15. Lace suits for summer are being featured in one of the smartest Hollywood shops. A model in beige tints had a short walking length pleated skirt, and a belted coat finished with revers, something after the style of a Norfolk jacket. It looked very trim, combining utility and femininity, and was set off with a matching hat with ribbon bow and a motif of lace. It seems to be a season of lace, and some of the evening frocks in this fabric are very beguiling. They’re a trimming in themselves, and a circular flounce or a full flare shows off their delicate airiness. A border of tulle on the skirt is another attractive emphasis. An especially charming creation was of eau de nil chiffon softened at the hip-line with vandyked lace of the same delicate tone of green, and the corsage outlined similarly, the skirt having two full flowing flounces. A rakish little coat edged with frills was an extra adornment. . The Felt Hat.

The felt hat is ever popular here, be it summer or winter, and clever fingers and original ideas have evolved artistic and becoming variations. That “skullcap” style ■ with turned-back flaps at the sides looks very captivating, and many up-to-the-moment girls have adopted the off-the-face fashion with their hats. It has a cachet all its own, but by the same token it has its limitations and its pitfalls! With the sun blazing forth its brightest, Miss Hollywood is beginning to appear in shady chapeaux of the lightest transparent straws for daytime wear, and ribbon is a much favoured accessory, while here and 'there a flower is carefully introduced as part of the colour scheme. Lace hats draped to the head give a coquettish air with their soft fall on the back of the neck, in awning style, and there arc all manner of deft touches and twists to suit one’s individuality. Waists In Position Again! Waists are back in position again 1 An inspiration from the Empire modes, and very intriguing to youthful figures, It’s a movable line, however,

so you can adjust it where you will. Many of the long dance frocks are defined high up with a narrow bjfct. of velvet ribbon to tone, ending \wtfo a flat tailored bow; others have sash ends reaching to the hem of the skirt. A most exclusive looking gown worn by a social leader at a recent dinnerdance was of white moire, very elegantly cut, and finished at tilic back with a huge pouf bow, merging into a graceful train. What Stars are Wearing. And perhaps you would like to know what some of the beautiful stars of filmland wore for Easter—a season that is always ushered in here with springtime costumes. The Easter ohurch services attracted a large number of. film worshippers, and in the promenade of churchgoers one gets a good idea of the trend of style. Bessie Love chose a navy blue suit with peplum line to the coat, the skirt dipping at the back, and a snug little hat of tan to match her shoes and hose. Bessie is petite and fair, and has a smile for everybody. Mary Brian had on a sports ensemble in orange and beige. The coat and skirt were

pleated, and a matching scarf was very effective. ' Dolores Del Rio’s suit was black shantung with semi-cape effeot, and golden yellow silk vestee, while her small black hat was banded with yellow grosgrain. Jeanette Loff was dainty in • a sorrento blue crepe suit, .with up-turned felt hat, and grey fox furs. Billie Dove chose buttercup yellow contrasted with black made on long lines. Sally Blane looked charming in floral taffeta trimmed with Alencon lace, and a silk hat in shades of larkspur blue. Lupe Valeg’s new Easter costume was a mustard-tinted ensemble with bolero jacket that set off her piquant personality. Joan Bennett wore a graceful frock of delphinium blue chiffon,, and a maline hat with floral garniture. Norma Kennedy had on a chic suit of blue and white crepe, and a blue bangkok hat. One notices the strict attention paid to detail in all the small accessories—and it is detail that counts in the perfection of an ensemble.
