ROGUES & VAGABONDS
AT WHANGAREI SHOW. FLEECING THE UNINITIATED. IMPOSSIBLE TO WIN. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WHANGAREI, Monday. Two showmen, G. H. Nicholson and John Brooks, who had a stand at the Winter Show -were brought before the Court on a charge of_ being rogues and vagabonds and betting on show premises. The evidence was to the effeot that Brooks scouted for likely patrons of a- game in which money was offered if two out of three balls were put through a hole. Two country visitors were invited to try. The first time they lost £1 each. Brooks then tried and won. The men were again induced to try, £25 for £5 being offered if ■the players, were successful, but they again lost;/ ' The players became suspicious when the showman demanded cash instead; of a cheque. The police wei e informed and the men were arrested. The police stated it was impossible for the uninitiated to win. The Magistrate fined Nicholson £3O and Brooks £2O, and threatened them with imprisonment if they came up again. _______________
