ANONYMOUS LETTERS.
SENT TO A CLERGYMAN. FOLLOW INQUEST SCENES. Anonymous letters and postcards bearing insulting messages have been sent to Rev. Vincent T. Macy, Rector of Broughton Malherbe, Maidstone, and his wife, who were involved in scenes at the inquest on Mrs GodfreyJull, of Pope’s Hall, Lenham, Kent, who poisoned herself. The coroner (Major Eric Clarke) did not read to the jury a letter sent to Mr Macy by Mr Charles GodfreyJull, Ihe dead woman’s husband, ‘and ruled that a stateinent which Mrs Macy wished to read was irrelevant. Mr Macy told a reporter that his wife had been one of the best friends of Mrs Godfrey-Jull, and knew the whole of her story. Mrs Macy had been called as a witness by the police, lie said, but she had had no opportunity to tell all she knew. He claimed that tier evidence might have thrown a different light on the matter. One of tlie offensive postcards sent to Mrs Macy is signed “D.D., M.A., Canon and Rector,” and bears a London postmark, it is written in the mist virulent terms, attacking her and her “behaviour as a Christian.” Airs Macy said: “We do not mind these letters and the scandal which is spread about us, because our reputation is assured. But they are very unfair, because they arc written hy people who clearly do not know the facts. It, seems hard to us that we were not allowed lo speak. If) was not ancient history wo wanted to tell, but what had happened within the last day or two, and surely that should have been allowed. It 1? a tragic affair, with five children now moehtrlcss. Surely Ihe legal procedure is out of date that prevented our evidence, and even our being given a chance to reply to -LLa/ikST"
