DAVIS CUP CONTEST. GERMANY V. BRITAIN. LANDMANN BEATS AUSTIN. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. —Copyright. LONDON, April 24. The opening singles match in the Davis Cup tie, Britain versus Germany, was played to-day at the Queen's Club courts. Dr. H. Landmann (Germany) defeated H. W. Austin, 6 —3, B—6, 5—7, 4—6, 6—4. The other singles match was not finished owing to the failing light. In this Prenn (Germany) is leading Lee, 6—4, 7—9, 6—3. The Austin-Landmann match resolved itself into a contest between youth and staying power. Austin’s old c-omplaint—cramp—added to his difficulties. Showers interfered with both matches.
