PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND v. WELLINGTON. NORTHERNERS AT WICKETS. THE EARLY BATSMEN FAIL. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. Friday. The final Plunket Shield match of the season commenced between Auckland and Wellington on the Basin Reserve to-day in fine, sunny weather. Following are tlie teams:— Wellington. Lowry (captain), Foley, James, Henderson, MeGirr, Hollings, Cameron, McLeod, Ross, .Massey, Gallichan. Auckland. Allcott, Elliott, Weir, Mills, Badelye, Gillespie, Matheson, limit, Wensley, Anthony, McCoy. Auckland won Hie toss, and Mills and Anthony went in to bat on what appeared to be a good wicket. MeGirr opened the Wellington ■bowling from the southern end, and off his fifth ball clean bowled Mills, before a run had been scored. Weir was next, and he and Anthony toko the score to eight. THE CAPTAINS.

Anthony, who was facing Massey, then cocked one to Cameron, who was fielding close in at square leg. Runs Come Slowly. After this rather disastrous start for Auckland the batsmen watched the howling carefully, and for a lime runs came slowly. Gillespie was applauded for a nice drive lo Hie fence off Henderson, and the rate of scoring improved. At 42 McLeod came on in place of Henderson, and his first over was a maiden. Gillespie was hailing nicely and soon passed Weir. Fifty went up in as many minutes. The scoring again slowed down when Gallichan, the slow left-hander, came on at Hie northern end. With the fourth ball of his third over he got Gillespie when the batsman went to hook one to leg.—-54—3—26. Quickly Ran to Double Figures. The newcomer was Wensley, who soon settled down. He showed a partiality for the leg side, and quickly ran to double figures. With the total at 93 Wensley, who was laying on the wood, drove one from Gallichan into Lowry’s hands at mid-off, and it was held. Weir, who had been batting quietly and steadily, was at this stage 31. Gallichan had now taken two wickets for 26. Allcott followed, and opened his account with four off Gallichan. This and a boundary by Weir brought 100 up to 100 minutes.--Weir continued to bat steadily, and reached 40 with the total at 110. At the luncheon adjournment the score was 122 for four wickets. Allcott was bowled by Gallichan for 41. Elliott joined Weir, the latter continuing to score at a good rate and 200 came up for the loss of five wickets.
