IS PRACTICE DANGEROUS? COUNTY COUNCIL PROBLEM. Is it advisable for members of public bodies to sign open cheques for any amount? This question was raised by Cr. T. H. Henderson at the meeting of the Waikato County Council yesterday. Cr. Henderson said he wished to make no reflection on the clerk or the staff, but if the Council persisted in its present policy of signing open cheques for large amounts trouble was bound to eventuate. He considered the principle was a wrong one. Mr A. A. Woodward, county engineer, pointed out that the practice of signing open cheques was widely followed by local bodies all over the country. Hundreds of cheques had to 1)0 signed every month and any other method might prove tedious. One alternative system would be to provide an imprest supply account.
