COUNTRY ROADS.

AROUND THE WAIKATO. STATE OF MAIN HIGHWAYS. ENGINERR’S MONTHLY REPORT. A comprehensive survey of recent work done in the county is given by Mr A. A. Woodward, engineer, in his monthly report presented to the Waikato County Council at its meeting yesterday. The report states: — “The grader has been over the length of the Hamilton-Paeroa main highway several times this month, and about 100 cubic yards of metal chips have been carted out and spread. The road is in very good order right through. Hamilton-Rotorua Main Highway.— The work of putting on the wearing coat of bitumen and chips on this road has been started again. Good progress is being made; about a mile has already been done. The length of this road from the end of the tar-sealing to Miller’s corner is being formed and re-graded in preparation for tar-seal-ing this summer. With the approach of the warm weather the sealed surface will require constant attention until all the bleeding has been stopped. Pokeno-Waihi Highway—The grader has been out of action for some time, but owing to the recent fine weather experienced this road has kept in good order. About 170 cubic yards of shingle has been put on in several places where required. Te Kauwhata-Waitakaruru Highway. —.The whole of the metal surface on this road has received attention, and altogether about 1200 cubic yards of metal has been used to repair the surface of this road. The road is in very good order right through. Ohinewai-Tahuna. —This road is much improved as the result of all the work done this year; except on the short lengths not completed the surface is very good. As soon as the roller is available the rough metal on Foote's swamp will be scarified and the road re-formed. Cambridge-Morrinsville.—This road has been re-graded from Cambridge to Ferris Hill, and that length is in good order. From. Tauwhare to the junction of the Hamilton-Morrinsville road about 80 cubic yards of metal has been spread. Except over Ferris’ Ilili this road is in very good order.

Whangamarino Riding Roads. —Most of the work this month has been concentrated on the main roads. The Waerenga-Taniwha road has been repaired in several places and re-graded right through. Maintenance work has been carried out on Drake's road, Cozens’ road, Horton’s road, KopukuWaerenga road, and several other roads in the riding.

Huntly Riding.—Rutherfurd's road has been re-graded right through and is in very good order again now. As soon as the quarry is opened again the metalling on this road will be continued. The roads around Te Hoe have been re-graded and maintenance work carried out where required. A new shed Is being built near Foote’s place off the Ohinewai-Tahuna road to house the new truck and grader.

Taupiri Riding Roads. —'Maintenance work has been done on the TaupirlOrinl road, Gordonton road, Pilkington’s road, Driver’s road and Proctor’s road; on the Tauhei-MorrlnsvJlle road extension repairs havo been done to the old metal. About 250 cubic yards of second-clas metal which slipped down in the Tauhel quarry has been carted out and used to resurface this road. The Kaimai road lias been scarified and re-graded and is now in very good order; also 80 cubic yards of rnetal has been carted on to Henry’s road and all the metal portions on this road roiled. The metalling on the Ten-foot end of this road will be recommenced as soon as the large slips in the Tauhei quarry have been removed. A temporary bridge has been built at the Tauhei stream to take the traffic whilst the new bridge is being built.

Rototuna Riding Roads.—During the month several of the roads in this riding have been re-graded. River road, Gray’s road, Sainsbury’s road and several roads in the Horsham Downs district have been attended to, also McDonald's road near Ngaruawahia. The sanding of the main Gordonton road has been continued.

Ruakura Riding.—Repairs have been carried out to several of the roads in this riding during the month. The Ruakura road from Peachgrove Avenue to Newstead has been scarified in several places and re-gravelled where required. The Tram road has been gravelled in several places. The Tram road gravel-pits have both been securely fenced and the noxious weeds cleared out.

Tamahere Riding.—The following roads have been repaired where necessary: Quarry road, Hill road, the Tama-herc-Bruntwood road. Part of Woodside road and Webster’s roads have been sanded; all the gravelled roads in tho riding have been re-graded and the roads generally are in good order. Cambridge Riding.—General maintenance has been carried out on the Zig-zag road, Victoria road, Johnson’s road, Fencourt Factory road, Thornton, St. Kilda, French Pass, Hannon's, Filleul’s and Hargreave’s roads, also Church road. A large number of roads in the riding were also re-graded and most of the roads in- this riding are in very good order. The staff and lorries have been engaged carting bitumen and chips for the Hamilton-Cam-brldge road, and also patrolling this road and blinding it with sand where the bitumen is bleeding.” The report was adopted.
