HAMILTON MOTORISTS.

NEW EXECUTIVE MEET.

DANGER OF LOOSE SAND. CONDITION OF MAIN ROADS. The first mecling of the new executive committee >of Ihe Hamilton agency of the Auckland Automobile Association was held last evening, the president, Dr. A. G. Waddell, presiding. Also present were Dr. F. D. Pinfold and Messrs A 0. Rice, E. Gillman, H. Toombs, E. R. Greslmm, JF. Strang, S. Wilson, J. M. Griffiths, E. Thomas and J. Gilbert (secretary). The dangerous nature of the Ilam-ilton-Ngaruawahia road was again commented upon by members Dr. Waddell reminded the meeting that the Hamilton coroner had recently emphasised that the death of a motor-cyclist on this road was due .to loose sand. A prosecution was pending against a member and it had been decided to make the condition of the road the chief point of ihe defence. It might be advisable to urge the Waipa County Council to expedite the proposed permanent works. Mr. Gilbert pointed out that the county council was applying to the Loans Board for permission to raise a loan before taking a poll of ratepayers.

“As long as the road remains in its present slate there will be more fatalities,” remarked the president. Another member said the graders caused long heaps of sand which made skidding a simple matter. Dr. F. D. Pinfold considered the matter could not be carried further at the present stage. They would l;ave to wait until the poll of ratepayers was taken. Mr Wilson thought the application of metal on the road had made it worst than previously. On the casting vote of the president it was resolved to take no action at present.

Heavy Lorry Fees. The opinion That the proprietors of the big Transport lorries travelling between (Hamilton and Auckland should pay heavier fees in licenses and taxation, was exepressed by Air. Rice. Taking all the present charges into consideration, he said he was convinced that the owners of lorries which did so much damage to the main highways should pay more. Air H. Toombs thought the matter was outside the province of the association. After a short discussion, ihe matter was allowed to lapse.

Safeguarding Motorists. Mr. Toombs suggested that motorists would be assisted in distinguishing trains at level crossings if trucks ami carriages had a white line painted on (he sides.— ll was resolved lo urge the matter on the general manager of railways. Hamllton-Te Kuiti Roads. Reference was made to tiie had condition of the main highways between Hamilton and Tc Kuiti and beyond Te Kuiti. The secretary pointed out that The Main Highways Board had under consideration the improvements of part of the roads. It might be advisable to take no action at present. Dr. Pinfold agreed to report on the roads In question at the next meeting. Mr. A. 11. Davies (IHillcrcest) wrote asking the association To assist in having Hooper’s Road Improved. It was resolved to refer the matter to the Waikato County Council.
