NOTES FROM THE RUNNING

Arihana was the only scratching for the opening event, the Normanby Handicap, for which there were ten starters. Motere was £OOO better backed than Sea Cob, with Currajong third choice. Jhe consistent Sea Cob was well equal to the occasion. Arikiloa, never so well-placed as the winner, finished solidly in second place. -Motore was a further half a length away third. His failure to begin well definitely settled his chances. Currajong, who was fourth, had every chance, but he failed to quite run the mile out. Brampton, who was next, also failed to stay, while Kaiwanga, the pacemaker, was beaten soon after the straight was reached.

Tho Hurdles to Elyslanor. Prince Lu, Kauri Park, The Lamb, Odin, Sleepy Sol and Askari were withurawn frum the Manukau Hurdles, for wnich event there were 12 starters, wing's Guard was favourite with £250 mure than the Awapuni candidate Elysianor, with Golden Wedding having most attention of the others. Elysianor \Vas always kept handy and the Elysian gelding w-us doing it comfortably at Hie finish to beat Catonian by half a length. The latter, who won so well on Saturday, made a good showing in Hie improved company. The fence at the bottom of the straight he iiit the first time and did not jump it straight in the run home, lloromea was never very far from the olher pair, but had no chance with them, although she beat ail the rest. Golden Wedding’s fourth was fair. Ramblin’ Kid made a good showing for a first start of the season, lie went out of action at the second fence from borne.

The Sprint Event. Lady Quex and Flying Prince declined their engagement in the Epsom Handicap, 4’or which 13 sprint candidates appeared. Silvermine was in most demand, with £437 more than High Finance, with Havering claiming most attention of the others. In a good race the honours -went to Havering, who has proved a very promising galloper during the brief period the Quin Abbey—Dreamer four-year-old lias been in action. He finished on strongly on this occasion against several challengers In the run home. The favourite was three-quarters of a length further back, after meeting with some disappointment on the journey. Awarere, not too well handled, was third, after losing a good position early. Taku Tama came from the back to get fourth, with Billikins and Value handy.

King Edward Memorial. Thirteen contested the King Edward Memorial Handicap, Standfast being the only one to decline his engagement. Star Stranger wound up a good favourite for the mile and a-quarter race with £437 more than Piuthair, while Amor was a good third choice. Hunting Cry, who was fifth in demand, was always at or near the lead, and displaying a determined closing run shook off Vertigern’s final challenge to win by a length and a-quarler. Hunting Dry is not a good looker, but the half-brother, by Hunting Song, to White Fang can gallop. Vertigern’s showing was good, as the Rossendale gelding was squeezed back early and was near the rear of the field for the first ' seven furlongs. Ho finished strongly, but the winner, better favoured in the running, was too good for him. High Pitch ran a good third, being in it all the way but not having the brilliance of the other pair at the finish. Singleton, who was fourth, made a favourable showing. In the Shade, who was next, was running on at the end, while Corinax, having his first outing for a time, was sixth. Then came Star Stranger, who did not get too good a run. Amor had every chance but failed to stay after coming into the straight in third place. Piuthair again failed to display the dash expected, although she ran belter than on Saturday.

Over the Country. The 11 carded appeared for the Oneliunga Steeplechase. Most money came for Sea Comet, with £OO more than Askari, while Calithe and Lady Spalpeen were the best supported of the others. Lady Spalpeen took charge before a mile had been traversed and was never headed. The Spalpeen— Helle Amie mare jumped really well, although she chanced a few fences. Sea Comet beat the others just as comfortably. Calithe was third and Itahepoto fourth, with the rest well out of it. Two-Year-Old Event. The 16 acceptors came out for the two-year-old event, the Musket Stakes, of five furlongs. The Chief Ruler— Silver Link colt Chief Link was backed down to odds on with £I2OO more than Chrysology while the Oil King—Trickle bracket was next in demand. Chief

Link, jumping out smartly from the inside position, won as he liked and ran the journey in 1.1 1-5, bettering the Welcome Stakes time by one-fifth. Although he had everything in his favour on this occasion, Chief Link, who was having his second start, is 'a promising colt. Re runs in the same ownership as Silvermine. Sight Draft, a brown filly by Paper Money—Gazeworthy, finished second. She is in ■I. T. Jamieson’s team, and though small is a game sort. She was paying over a score. Chrysology (Psychology—Desert Gold), who was third, was not well drawn and did not have as good a run as the other pair.

A Short-priced Winner. Currajong, who had started in the opening event, was the only scratching for the Hobson Handicap, for which there were 14 starters. Refresher was backed down well inside even money, with £1722 more than Bombarder, Roman Pearl being third in demand. The short price was well justified, as the favourite, always prominent, won comfortably. Gay Cockade did best of the others and should be worth noting for the country circuit. Appellant ran a fair race into third place, with War Officer heading tho others.

The Concluding Event. For ihe concluding event of (he meeling, the Liverpool Handicap, Havering and Arikitoa dropped out. Mervelte, who had IJ. Morris’ services, was a prime fancy with £OOS more than Utairi, and Merry Mint heading the others in Ihe quotations. There was a surprise of the prominent order in store when a big outsider in Eager Rose rolled home to give her supporters close lo twothirds of a century. The Day CometWee Rose mare, who was wide out at the post, Was prominent from barrier rise and ran the mile in lhe smart time of 1.119 5-5. Tin's was her lirst success since the Christmas fixture on the course. Le Choucas worried Merry Mint out of second money. Mcrvcttc failed lo get a good position early, and although she was running on in fifth place at the finish she was not actually dangerous. Merry -Mint may have been second with a clear run in the straight.
