ANZAC DAY CELEBRATIONS
GOVERNOR-GENERAL’S VIEWS. j The following letter has been received by Colonel G. T. Ilall, president j of the Wellington Returned Soldiers’ i Association, from Mr A. C. Day, olli- ! cial secretary to His Excellency the Governor-General, Sir Charles * Fer- i gusson:— ! "Dear Mr President, —His Excel- : lency the Governor-General ... is anxious that the views which he ex- j pressed at Auckland (on Anzac Day ' celebrations) should no,t be misinter- ! preted. Ilis remarks were not intend- 1 ed to convey the impression that 1 Anzac Day should be ‘a more cheerful day.’ That might be taken to ’ mean that it should be observed quite differently to what is the present custom, and be a day for sports, ' games and enjoyment. Such is very far from his idea. His idea was that Anzac Day services should be less mournful in character; that we should emphasise the glory of those who died for their country rather than grief and sorrow for their death. He suggested that the solemnity of the services j should be preserved, but that there ! should be less mournfulness in their i character. He is anxious that this j should be clearly understood, and ! would be greatly obliged if you would ! correct any impression entertained , that he advocated the change referred , to by an Auckland delegate, as rc- j ported ” [
