TWO NEW NAMES.

I THE VACANT JUDGESHIPS. i I A NEW CHIEF JUSTICE? Legal gossip has it that Messrs M. J. Gresson and J. 11. Upham, of Christchurch, are likely to be in the running for the vacant position on the Supreme Court bench (says the Chrisichurch Sun). Mr W. J. Hunter is another Christchurch barrister whose claims are the subject of conversation*. There are other strong "possibilities" among legal men outside of Christchurch. Foremost among these is Mr J- B. Callan, jnr., of Dunedin, whose presence on the bench, it is generally considered, would strengthen it considerably. It is also suggested that in the event of the present Chief Justice, Sir Charles Skerrctt, retiring from the position, his likeliest successor is Mr M. Myers, K.C., of Wellington.
