THE MEAT INDUSTRY. LONDON QUOTATIONS. Beef—New Zealand ox beef, hinds 4gd, fores 34d; Argentine chilled, hinds 7Jd, fores 4ld. In the market for New Zealand beef any change is in favour of sellers; demand is moderate. Pork—English pork, 801 b to 1001 b 10id; New Zealand porkers, 801 b to 1001 b 6Jd, 1001 bto 1201 b 6id. Quotations for New Zealand pork nominal; frozen pork rather more inquiry. SALE OF PIGS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company., Ltd., Hamilton, report: We held the third annual sale of pedigree pigs on account of Mr F. Discombe, Lucernedale Stud, near Cambridge, on April 18, when there was a good attendance, buyers being present from ail parts of the Auckland province. Prices were lower than those ruling last year, which no doubt may be accounted for by the present weak demand for young store pigs. The highest figure (20gns) was obtained for a Large White sow in farrow, which was purchased by Mr Fountain, of Whakatane. We quote: Berkshire boars, 6 months old, 5 to 71 gns; Berkshire sows, 7 to 9 gns; weaner do, 3 to 4 gns; Tamwortli boars, 3 months old, 3 to 6 gns; sows, same age, 54 to 9 gns; weaner Tamworth boars, 2 gns; sows, 3 to 4 gns; Large White sows, 6 months old, empty, 8 4 to 13 gns; 1 young sow in farrow, 20 gns; Large Black weaner sows, 21 gns; boars, 24 to 3 gns. Messrs Dalgety and Company, Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from the London house, dated April 18: — Butter —The market is steadier. New Zealand, finest salted, 166 s to 168 s; Danish butter, 176 s to 178 s; Australian, finest unsalted, 156 sto 158 s, salted, 156 s to 158 s, g.a.q., 148 s to 1525. Cheese —The market is quiet. New Zealand, white and coloured, 96s to 975, exceptional, 98s; Canadian, white 108 s to 112 s, coloured 104 s to 108 s; Australian, white and coloured, 93s to 955.

ADDINGTON MARKET. From the point of view of vendors, prices must generally have been satisfactory at Addington. Fat lambs sold very well, and theie was also good competition for fat and store sheep and fat cattle. The entry of cattle totalled 464 head. Quality was better than usual, and the proportion of prime steers was larger than has been the case at recent sales. The sale opened with prices on a par with late rates. This level was maintained until the closing stages, when there was a tendency for prices to harden, more especially for medium to good heifers and cows, which on an average were from 10s to 15s a head better. Steers were practically unchanged. Prices per 1001 b were: Best steer and heifer beef to 425, good prime 37s 6d to 41s, medium quality 35s to 375, heavy weight 35s to 37s 6ri, good cow beef 34s to 375, medium 29s 6d to 335, and rough down to 255. The fat sheep forward filled twelve races. Ewes formed the bulk of the entry. Very few really good wethers were penned. The sale was sound throughout. For the greater part late, rates were mainlained. bul. over the last two races there, was an improvement of up to Isa head. Very few passings were made. Store sheep were yarded in larger numbers. On ihe whole, Ihev met with a satisfactory demand. Wethers were cheaper by Is to Is fid a head, hut. at the previous sale prices for wethers were unusually high. Good young ewes sold well, and there, was active rompelilinn for ewe lambs and forward wether lambs. Old ewes were, rhea peiv The entry of fat lambs totalled 3980 head. All dcrrnlly finished met with keen bidding, at prices which were fully equal in, and in some cases in excess of, schedule rates. Sixty-six head of dairy cattle were penned. The demand was good, especially for any sorts with milking qualifications, and most, lots were cleared at satisfactory figures. Cows formed the bulk of the store cattle entry. There were no quotable lines of steers or heifers. All lots of store, cattle sold well. Yealers were yarded in large numbers, and the quality was lietler than usual. They sold well at laic rates. Both fat and store pigs were yarded in large numbers. The market for fat pigs was irregular, but generally they were, a bit cheaper. Store pigs were much in over-supply. Sales were hard to make, and a considerable drop in prices was recorded.
