FINE RACE FOR TE AROHA TROTTING CUP

GOLD DIAL NARROWLY DEFEATS TAIPARE. .VESUVIUS THE LEADING PERFORMER AT ASHBURTON. MARLBOROUGH MEETING AT TRENTHAM. LEADING HONOURS TO VESPERUS AND KILPERON. Trotting programmes were carried out on Saturday last' at Te Aroha and at Ashburton, while tho Marlborough Racing Club opened its meeting at Trentham, on which course it Is being concluded to-day. At Te Aroha a very successful gathering was recorded from the quality of the light harness sport, and the financial turnover that attended the festival. The honours In the Cup went to the Wellsford owned Gold Dial, after a splendid race In which the issue was in doubt until the last few strides. The ' Tamahere trained Taipare was runner-up, while third money was secured by the Henderson representative, Nelson Tasker. The Trotters’ event on the programme was won by the Hamilton horse, Gold Star, who went a solid race to beat Floraline and Sebisca for the thick end of the stake. The big money at Ashburton was credited to Vesuvius-, with Dalmeny and Epigram the next to finish. The Cup at the Marlborough Club’s fixture saw Vesperus first home from Oratrix and Ring Boy, while Kilperon proved the best of the sprinters seen out at Trentham on Saturday.

-f TE AROHA TROTS. The Opening Event. < Edna Thorpe, Crete, Money and Single Mint were scratched for the Waitoa Handicap with which the meeting opened. Beauty Spot was a £l4 better favourite than Rosie Thorpe. The winner turned up in the Te Awamutu candidate, Zealous, who went away well and was not troubled from that out, being well handled by A. Broughton. Zealous returned nearly double figures. Lord Haldane, who finished second, was always in the picture and the supporters of the Good Gift gelding handled a nice return. The hack marker, Bell Rial, was travelling fast over the last half mile but the pair in front were doing it too evenly and the Wellsford trained candidate had to be content with third place. Margaret Wallace, who was fourth, went an improving race and will only require to get a little more solid to be h&ard from effectively. The Beauty Spot and Rosie Thorpe, were not there at-the finish,, although the former was showing up for a time. The Back-Marker Scores. Elego was the only one missing when the field paraded for the Elstow Handicap. There were fourteen starters of whom most money came for the Te Awamutu representative, Peter Tracey, with the Taupiri prepared Lackiewood next in demand. The Glaudeiands trained Garwood, who was eighth fancy, was so far in front half a mile from home that the race appeared a certainty for him but he stopped suddenly and several went past him. The back marker, Lackiewod, pulled off the prize but he had to he shaken up to stall off a Mate run by Billy Garhine. Peter ftrown, who is trained by C. Buckingham at Claudelands, was a good 1 third and Gold Star was going fast in fourth place. Carwood absolutely refused to strike a gait again. Andover’s Good Win. Bell Dial and Bell Tower were scratched for the Manawaru Handicap. The Kama Rama owned Gold Sound was the elect of investors, carrying nearly £IOO more thau the Tc Awamutu prepared Andover. Andover, although a little slow to .move, was first home, the Hova gelding taking charge before a mile had been covered. His driver, A. Broughton, who was behind Zealous, the opening winner, gave Andover a breather and he stalled off a strong finishing run by Sebisca quite readily, although there was only a neck in it. Sebisca was prominent all the way to beat all but the winner and trotting a nice ’ race. Admiral Lock went a solid race but found the opposition 100 good.

Hot Springs to Horizon. Lackiewood, who had been penalised 24 yards for his earlier win, did not accept for the Hot Springs Handicap for which tlic Mangere candidate Haerangi Pai was £164 better supported than Cornelian. The race went to the fifth favourite, Horizon, who was always prominent once the field settled down and stayed the mile and a half out in good style. The favourite, who got. second, might have won but for losing some ground througli failure to go away promptly. Bell Dial went a very solid race into third place, while Lady Barrington, who was fourth, showed a lot of brilliancy in the middle stages of the journey. Cornelian never got into the picture. Gold Star Wins Trotters’ Race. Twelve unhoppled trotters contested the Waihou Handicap for which Elego was the only withdrawal. Most money came for the Taniwha owned Floralinc, who was nearly £9O better thought of than the Hamilton prepared Gold Star. The latter, although his effort was not entirely free of'error, prevailed nicely at the close of tile two miles in which lie was well handled by his trainer, \V. G. Stephens, who has been doing well with the Gold Bell gelding since he took charge of him a few months hack. Floralinc went a good race from ViO yards behind to get second money. Sebisca would? haye been second instead of third hut Ihc Harold Dillon gelding made a break at a critical stage of the run in. Wild Nut was doing it very evenly over iiie concluding stages to get fourth. The Saddle Performers. When the field was posted for the Farewell, a mile saddle event, Beil Tower, Toll Chimes and Andover (the latter penalised from 3Gyds to 60yds for his earlier win), were missing. There were sixteen starters, the Tamahere trained Liberate being entrusted with most money, nearly £2OO more than the amount carried by Harris, the second favourite. Charming Pronto was in front when the field settled down and the Auckland candidate stayed there throughout. Gold Cast, who brought second money to Hamilton where he is trained by C. Buckingham, was in that place from early on in the proceedings. Blair Audubon, who was at a Jong price, was third, hut he could make no serious impression on the pair ahead. Bingen King, who was the next home, went a useful race. Liberate was in iiie picture for a time hut he dropped hack over the closing stages. A. Broughton, who rode the winner, placed three successes to his credit during the day.

The Cup Presented. At the conclusion of the chief event Mr C. E. Macmillan, M.P., handed over the handsome silver cup valued at 50sovs and presented by Mr Geo. Mcj Millan, of Auckland, to Mr G. A. Williams, the owner-driver of the winner, Gold Dial. In doing so the speaker remarked upon the splendid race provided for (he trophy and the progress that the sport was making in the district. A pleasant ceremony concluded .with cheers for all concerned.. Successful Gathering. | The gathering was in every way a | success and in this the president of ; the Club (Mr B. L. Sound's), the act-ing-secretary (Mr G. A. Bush) and j the various officials associated with them arc deserving of congratulation. Messrs R. Wylie (judge), C. E. Goosrr.an (handicapper), .1. Williamson (starter), and ,1. K. Douglas (official timekeeper), were in important positoins which they filled capably. The following arc the concludL .; results:— HOT SPRINGS HANDICAP. Of £l2O (limit 3.30), one mile and a half. ' 3 HORIZON, Mr G. 11. Mitchell’s b g by Huia Dillon—The Limit, 12yds ( J. G. Robertson) .... 1 1 lIAERANGI PAI, Mr G. Profiteer was the early 1 leader from Marina, Gold Sound, Horizon, Bell Dial, Lady Barrington and Haerangi Pai. Manna was the pilot along Iho back with Horizon, Bell Dial, Gold Sound, Lady Barrington and Haerangi Pai in that order. Horizon took charge before the straight was reached and won by a length and a half from Haerangi

Fine Race fop the Cup. Toll Chimes did not keep his engagement in the Cup foe which l ho good field of fourteen were harnessed up.* When the machine had closed the Christchurch candidate, Tamerlane, was in the post of honour, carrying over £BO more than Concertina with the Tamaliero trained Taipare the next in demand. A finer ' race could not be hoped for. The 4*cld was bunched for practically the whole journey, Mars and Nan liich being the pair lo drop out.< carl>. Tamerlane battered his • supporters jftrst when the pressure was right on. Then Taipare loomed up a furlong from home and looked like seeing it out, but the Wellsl'ord owned Gold Dial dashed up in the concluding stages to get the 'verdict by a neck. It was a fine finish to a great contest. Nelson 'tasker, who was third, made a run about half a mile from home and after temporarily having the front failed to hold off the pair who were in front of the Nelson Bingen horse at the post. .The Claudelands representative, Peter McKinney, went quite a good race to be fourth, after being handy all the way. Tamerlane and Bingen King failed when the host was required of thorn and tire former js probably not quile as good as some have claimed for the aged son of Pctereta and Miss Hugo. Lord Haldane Succeeds. Single Mint, Great Eyre, Gold Treasure and Cornwallis were scratched for the Ruakaka Handicap for which the big field of twenty went to the post. The Epsom representative, Ohena, was a £2 l hotter fancy than the Mangere trained Gaza, with Lord Haldane third choice. The latter, who had finished second in the opening event of the day, was always prominent on this occasion and was first home with a neck to spare. Great tfcllin finished strongly to get second money. The Baliin gelding was at a score for a win which was surprising after his latest form hut the fact of having to go through the big field probably made hackers shy. Gaza went a good race, being proclaimed Wfffc winner half a mile from home but he weakened to some extent in the run In. Edna Thorpe went a steady race Into fourth berth. The favourite Ad not get really dangerous.

Pai, who was a length in front of Zell Dial. Lady Barrington -\vas fourth with Manna and Willie Mac the next to finish. Times, 3.39 3-5, 3.40 1-3 and 3.40 3-5.
