Pa pa lowa i, a little holiday resort in the Gatlin,s district, does not possess a policeman, but judging from an incident which occurred lately the residents are quite capable of protecting their own interests (writes Mr C. E. Good in the Christchurch Sun). A farmer, enjoying his.pipe on the verandah after a hard day’s work, noticed a big limousine drive past hi,; gate, suddenly stop, and switch ol' all lights. Thinking that the occupants might be making him a visit, he waited a while; then, his curiosity aroused, lie sauntered down to the car. There was no sign of the passengers, but from his adjoining orchard came the soft thud of

falling fruit. Being somewhat of a wag, he did not disturb the marauders, but strolled back to the-car and took a seat in the rear compartment. On the lloor he noticed a bag containing five fine groper, recently caught. Selecting the best one, he waited the return of he passengers, Presently he heard voices, and through a gap in the hedge emerged three men, valiantly struggling with a large \sack of apples. When they reached the road they were greeted with: “Thank you, boys, just leave the sack there; I intended to pick them to-morrow, but you' have saved me a job. Thanks also for the groper, I do enjoy a bit of fish for breakfast.” Softly and silently the big car once more pursued its way, but sad were the hearts of the passengers.
