Replying to a Labourite statement, Mr Bruce said there were 436 Industrial disputes In Australia last year, and cost workmen 1,712,000 working days and £1,666,000 In wages. The total wages lost during the past six years amounted to £7,134,000.
650 MINERS DISMISSED. DISTRICT HARD HIT. (Received March 30, 10 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 30. Another 650 employees at Aherdare Central Colliery at Ccssnock will receive notice of dismissal at the weekend owing to lack of coal orders. The South mine is already closed. The district is thus hard hit. A large amount has already been spent on relief.
FEDERAL LABOUR PARTY. RESIGNATION OF LEADERSHIP. (United Press Association.) CANBERRA, March 29. In the House of Representatives today Mr M. Charlton announced that he had resigned the leadership of the Federal Labour Party, owing to illhealth. Matthew Charlton was born at Linton, Victoria, in 1866, and at the age of 14 lie started work as a mane tapper. He soon acquired an interest in industrial and political affairs. He was elected to the State Parliament for Waratah in 1003 and for Northumberland in 1004. He was elected Io the Federal Parliament in 1910 as member for Hunter, New South Wales. He was appointed leader of the Federal Parliamentary Labour Party in January, 1922. At the League of Nations Assembly in 1924 he was an Australian delegate.
