AUSTRALIAN POLICY.
MIGRATION ATTACKED.
PLEA FOR PATRIOTIC IDEAL.
LIMIT ENTRY OF FOREIGNBBS
(United Press Association.) (Received March 20. 12.20 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 29. Mr Win. Hughes, addressing the Nationalist Associalion, made, a strong attack on Ihe Federal Government in.migranl policy. lie said the ideal for Australia was
& democratic country, peopled by men and women of the British race, and of British birth. The immigration policy was not compatible with that ideal. He condemned ihe arrangement allowing in a large number of Italians, and the freedom" given to Soviet agents to enter. The Soviet stood for something definite. So did Mussolini. We seemed to stand half-way between the two He asked tc whom did Australia belong —to us o* to Mussolini, or to the Soviet agents? He appealed to Australians to make this very definite and certain, and not to take orders from Moscow or Mussolini. The last-named had but to rattle a ( sword in a scabbard, and we arc to allow his grandmothers, uncles and aunts to enter Australian.
Mr Hughes referred to America refusing to accept Australian musicians, yet we allow the scum of America to come here, and we took those things lying down. For many years America stood for a policy of making the country the melting pot of Europe, and she got people there who were the scum of Europe. They did not melt, and all her sins had come home to roost. Dealing with Bert Hinkler's welcome at Canberra, Mr Hughes said the picture shown that night was of nothing but American aeroplanes and American big guns, yet America fired few big guns while the war lasted. As for her aeroplanes, you could have packed them under the platform on which ho stood. Without a definitely patriotic Australian ideal, linked with the Empire ideal, to to start and kindle enthusiasm in young men and women, we must perish.
