BRITAIN AND EGYPT
PROPOSED TREATY. CANADA'S DISCLOSURE. MAY AFFECT OTHER DOMINIONS (Received March 29, 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 28. It is stated that Canada's premature disclosure of her dlsassociation with the proposed Egyptian treaty was somewhat embarrassing to Britain, not because Britain denies Canada's right not to concur in this or any other treaty, but because the treaty Is still unratified and may never be ratified, therefore Canada's publication of a disclaimer was not only unnecessary but will possibly strengthen the Egyptian refusal to ratify, in the hope of detaching the other Dominions. It is unlikely that it will succeed in detaching Australia and New Zealand, whose interests necessarily coincide with Britain's maintenance of the Suez Canal route. Authorities point out that Canada, South Africa, and the Free State are commercially independent of the Suez which Is the main artery to India and Australia. It is regrettable, therefore, that Canada's disclosure may possibly be detrimental to Australia and India.
