HIGH COMMISSIONER.
INSPECTS NEW DOCK. i GENERAL RYRIE AT LIVERPOOL. (From a Correspondent.) LONDON, Feb. 11. Major-General the lion. Sir Granville 'fie Laune Ryrie, K.C.M.G., C. 8., V.D., the Higlr-.Cominissioner for Australia, visited Liverpool on February '.i and JO. I On arrival at Liverpool Sir Granville : proceeded to tho Labour Exchange to ] interview . certain migrants. In the evening be attended a dinner at the Adclphi Hotel as the guosl of Ihe Liverpool Engineering Society. On the morning of the tOtli Sir Granville visited the Liverpool Cathedral and afterwards was the guest of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, and the lloyal Colonial Institute (Liverpool branch) at a luncheon given in his honour, at which Lieut.-Colonel Albert Buckley, J.P., JJ.S.O., presided. After luncheon Sir Granville delivered a brief address on "Anglo-Australian Trade." The luncheon was attended by representatives of the leading Australian interests in the city, including the chairI .nan and geenral manager of the Mersey I Docks and Harbour Board. The afternoon programme included a visit In (ho Mocks. Sir Granville had expressed a keen desire lo be specially shown I'm new Gladstone Docks, and he was much impressed with the facilities provided for enabling the largest I type of vessel to enter these docks at practically any time of the day or night, tie showed keen interest in the large electric, quay and roadside cranes which have been provided at Ihe treble storey sheds erected on the quay sides of ttie new docks for Ihe handling and storage of cargo and the adequate rail facilities with which these sheds are equipped. He was accompanied on his inspection by Mr A. B. Cauty, 0 f the White Star Line; and the general manager and principal officials of the Dock Board.
