A young married man was to—day remanded on a charge of assaulting a girl of six at Hamilton East on Friday.

During the annual conference of the Railway Officers' Institute at Wellington, the president (Mr V. 11. J. The recent efforts to raise money on behalf of the Y.W.G.A. by means of surprise packets were condemned by Rev. A. M. The unusual spectacle of the secretary of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society appearing in the Police Court charged witli a breach of the Arms Act was witnessed when Charles W. Hervey pleaded guilty to charges of procuring possession of a firearm without being in possession of a permit and of being in possession of a firearm for a longer period than seven days without being the registered owner of it. It was explained that the Acclimatisation Society bought a gun at the request of the Forestry Department for the purpose of killing Gcer. The gun was not used, but lay in the secretary's office, as it was unsuitable for the purpose for which it was secured. Defendant was fined 10s on cacti charge.
