PUZZLES AND RIDDLES.
BURIED BIRDS. In these two little verses the names of several birds are hidden. How many can you find? How sweet it is in the meadow, Where the cow lies on the lee, And the musical sound of the sheepbells Brings content to you are me. How fine, too, the bright sea gleaming, Most rich in jewelled foam, With rushing waves so blithe and free And ships sailing gaily home. BEHEADED WORD. Though I am small I'm when entire Enough to set the world on fire; Let but a letter disappear And I enclose a herd of deer; Omit another and you'll find 1 once contained all human kind. Four words of four letters, all beginning with one vowel, which, placed in their right order, read diagonally downwards from left jlo right spell a kind of pitcher, and read upwards give the name of a famous garden. The words mean: Always, a name, a Biblical place, and to deserve. A Word Square (horizontally and vertically) : A suggestion, a highpriced article, leisure, an open space. Why, should turtles be pitied more than oilier creatures?—Because theirs is such a hard case. Why is the letter D like good advice well taken?—Because, it makes men mend. Why is an author more free than a king?—Because he can choose his own subjects. Why is it useless to give a horse, food?—Because lie cannot eat a bit. * * * * Why is a hill like a lazy young dog? —Because it is a slope up (slow pup). * * * * What tongue can hurt you without speaking a word?—The tongue of your shoe. * * * * Why is the letter F like Paris?— Because it is the capital of France.
