LICENSING COMMITTEES.
.. CLOSING OF THE NOMINATIONS. NO ELECTION IN HAMILTON. POSITION AT OIfINEMURI. Nominations for Licensing Commit-' tees throughout New Zealand closed at noon to-day. According to law the triennial election for Licensing Committees must take place on the second Tuesday in March in the year following a general election. The election will therefore take place on March 9. There are 57 licensing districts in New Zealand, and five candidates are required to be elected for each district, no-license districts, oM course, being excepted. ■> The franchise for Licensing Committee elections is very wide, being actually the same as that at the general election. It has become notorious that few of those who are entitled to vote avail themselves of the right to do so. Interest in these elections is, generally speaking, comparatively small. In the case of Ohinemuri on the present occasion it is anticipated that a much larger vote, in proportion to the voting power, will be exercised than in any other district. The absent-voting system in vogue at the Parliamentary election is not operative in connection with the election of Licensing Committees. As only five nominations have been ‘received for the Hamilton Licensing Committee no election will be necessary. The following gentlemen have therefore been declared elected:—Messrs J. R. Fow, W. F. Mason, R. English, J. McKinnon and G. Parr. The District Stipendiary Magistrate, Mr Wyvern Wilson, is chairman of the committee ex ofllcio. NO ELECTION. POLL UNNECESSARY. WELLNGTON, Saturday. No election will be necessary for the Wellington Licensing Committee.
