IS IT GOLF?
GILLIES' SKY-SCRAPER TEE,
(Australian and N.Z. Cable Assn.) LONDON. May 27.
The Daily Mail says that the opening of the amateur golf championship was enlivened by a, discussion on the " sky-scraping " lee used by the New Zealander Gillies. Though committeemen privately requested him not, to use it Gillies .decided not to drop il unless officially requested lo do so. He went out and magnificently drove by means of a piece of rubber piping, lifting the ball 10 inches and beating Peace 2 up and 1 to play. He returned to find an official notice posted hoping that golfers, before using abnormal methods and abnormal implements would consider whether they were acting in conformity with the spirit of the rules, and recommending players lo master the use of their clubs rather than use implements never associated with the game. *
The Daily Mail comments that there is no rule against the use of the tee.
