OBITUARY.

ANNE EDGECUMBE: AETAT 74,

The death occurredyesterday at the age of 74 years at her residence at Remucra of Anne Edgecumbe, wife of George Edgecumbe, formerly proprietor of the Waikato Times and the founder of the '-Argus," which was incorporated with the Times in 1914. The deceased lady, who was a sister of the late Mr James Hume, formerly manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Ngaruawahia, and at Hamilton, was well known and highly respected throughout the AVaikato, where she resided for the greater part of her life. She was born in Selkirk (Scotland) and came out to New Zealand in the early days of colonisation, settling at Ngaruawahia, from whence she was married. It was in 1919 that Mr and Mrs Edgecumbe removed from Hamilton to Remuera. Of latter years the deceased lady had. been in ill-health. The end was peaceful and not unexpected. Deceased reared a family of ten, three of whom have predeceased her. Her husband, four (laughters' and three sons survive, Mr J. H. Edgecumbe, of Hamilton being the youngest son. In church matters the deceased was an enthusiastic worker and was connected with St Peter's Guild. The sympathy of a wide circle of friends in the community will be extended to Mr Edgecumbe and family in the loss of wife and mother. The funeral ■(private) will take place in the Hamilton West Cemetery 10-morrow after.. noon.

Victor Herbert was the grandson of Samuel Lover, the Irish novelist, and was himself horn in Ireland. When a violinist, in the Court Orchestra at Stuttgart, he married the prima donna Therese Foerster- He has written many comic operas, including " Babette," "Babes in Toyland," and "The Singing Girl." He wrote the score for "The Only Girl," produced in London in 1915.
