STREETS MAINTENANCE.

4, , £IO,OOO ALLOTTED. THE NEW ESTIMATES. In the Hamilton Borough estimates for the. current year, an allocation of £IO,OOO is made for direct streets maintenance, with a further £IOOO allowed for contingencies.' The committee reported last night that the amounts directly expended on' streets maintenance during the last four years have been: 1921, £8051: 1922, £69iS; 1923, £6637; 1924, £5352. The committee stated that it was clear, therefore, that while traffic was increasing, they had been reducing the. allowance to streets year by year. The practice was obviously unsatisfactory, and they must return to a more satisfactory policy,, and, in addition, do something lo make up the accumulated leeway. Attention was drawn to the fact that of late the Council had found themselves without, any maintenance moneys in hand during the latter part of the summer, and as a result maintenance had been at a standstill during the season when preparation for the winter should be urgently prosecuted. The matter will be dealt with by the Council in committee next week.
