VALEDICTORY.
CONSTABLE W. BERN. PRESENTATION FROM FORCE. , To mark the termination of his career of 44 years in the service of the Police Department members of the local force assembled in the station last evening to do honour to Constable W. Bern, who retired on superannuation a short time ago. Inspector Wohlmann, in presenting on behalf of the force a valuable silvermounted walking-stick suitably 1 engraved a set of silver-mounted pipes and a ’well-filled tobacco pouch, to Constable Bern, made reference to the high esteem and popularity in which the recipient was held, and to his .-long and faithful service in the Department. The constable’s association with Hamilton East, the charge of which district he had held for 16 years, was specially referred to. Senior-Sergeant Mathew, Detective Sweeney, and Constable Kirby also spoke in eulogistic terms of Constable Bern’s long and faithful service; wishing him a happy and peaceful close to his remaining years. The guest of honour suitably replied, making interesting reference to his old associates, and relating reminiscences of early days. The interests of the Police Force would be ever his.
