The New Zealand Meat Producers' Board has made arrangements by which those desirous of sending single carcases of lamb to friends in England may do so by notifying the Board and remitting an amount specified in the advertisement. Besides providing an acceptable Christmas gift to friends at Home, these will doubtless do much to advertise the excellent quality of New Zealand lamb in the Old Country. Samuel Vernon Dent, a single man, is supposed to have been drowned last night off a launch which belonged to Mr Avey, of Kerepeehi. The launch left Thames at li p.m., and on arrival at Pipiroa Dent was missing. It is supposed he fell overboard. The police are dragging the river. Dent came from Whangarei a few years ago, and- has been employed on the Hauraki Plains.

A fire early yesterday destroyed the Wairarapa Brick, Tile and Drainpipe Company’s works. The blaze evidently started in No. 3 kiln, which was used during the night. The workmen on duty left about an hour before the outbreak. The brigade saved the engine-room and boiler, but the rest of the building, drying sheds, and stocks were destroyed. The company has been in existence for 23 years, and the past year was practically the only time the works showed a decent profit. The insurances, £ISOO, represent less than a quarter of the loss.

A meeting of railway employees was held in the Frankton Assembly Hall last evening to hear an explanation by Mr C. R. Robeison, late general manager of the State Fire Insurance, and now manager and organiser of the Civil Servants’ Insurance, of the working pf the scheme. The project, which was initiated by the different branches of the Civil Service, aims to declare, dividends and to hand the money back to the shareholders rather than set up a big surplus stock. The address was listened to in appreciative manner by those present, and at the termination Mr Robeison was accorded a hearty vole of thanks.

The public reading by the Hamilton Shakespeare Club of A. A. Milne’s delightful play, “The Lucky One”, proved very successful, and was much enjoyed by a large audience. Each character was well taken, the cast being as follows;—Gerald Farringdon, Mr George Ranstead; Bob Farringdon (his eldest brother), Mr W. L. Ranstead; Sir James Farringdon (his father), Mr E. Wilson; Lady Farringdon (his great aunt), Mrs F. Jolly; Miss Farringdon, Mrs H. Valder; Pamela Carey (his betrothed), Miss M. Lovel; Henry Wentworth, Mr McNeish; Thomas Todd, Mr W. J. King; Letty Herbert, Miss Madeline Dowd; Mason (his old nurse), Mrs M. Bell.
