LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A severe thunderstorm passed over Hamilton last night. Very heavy rain fell. A unique record in local'body represention was referred to at the meeting of the Waikato County Council today. In welcoming the old and the new members Cr. Hinton pointed out that the chairman (Cr. Bailey) had represented the Iluntly riding for 37 year's-continuously. With the exception of the occasion when lie was first successful Cr. Bailey had been returned unopposed, which was a very genuine testimony to the confidence reposed in him by his ratepayers. Speaking at Elstow a few evenings ago, Mr P. 11. Oldham, of Hamilton, referred to _,herd testing, remarking that the average cow in New Zealand produced 1611 b of butter-fat at J.s 6d per lb, value £l2 Is 6d, cost of production £l2; profit Is Gd. “But,” said Mr Oldham, “increase the average production per cow to 3021 b of butlerfat, and the profit will be £lO 11s 6d per cow, or equal to 140 average cows to-day.” There was a pleasant function at the Midland Hotel, Wellington, when Mr E. J. Carroll, head of the theatrical Ann responsible for the present tour of the celebrated artist, ' Sir Harry Lauder, entertained a number of Wellington? pressmen at dinner. It was quite an informal affair held to give the pressmen an opportunity of meeting Sir Harry Lauder. The toasts honoured were: “The King,” “Sir Harry Lauder,” and “Mr E. J. Carroll.” Mr 0. N. Campbell, chief drainage engineer, Auckland, wrote tp the Waitoa Drainage Board, referring to the placing of the 18-inch pipe culverts for the Waharoa drain. The department is prepared fo find on a £ for>£ basis a sum not exceeding £250 for the 'deepening of the Waharoa drain westwards from the Ohinc stream to Henry’s low ground, and the piacAig of 18-inch culverts at west road add Shannon outlet drains as suggested, on condition that the Board agreed to find the balance of tile money. The total cost of the work sviil not probably exceed £350. The Board agreed to wait on the engineer with the idea of obtaining a belter arrangement.

A meeting of the committee formed at the public meeting, held on 17th inst., to promote the Hamilton Permanent Investment and Building Society, was held last evening, Mr J. R- Fow in the ohair. A provincial board of nine directors was appointed. These wilt hold office until after the society is formed, and shares are allotted, when a meeting of shareholders will be held. Mr W. j’ King was appointed solicitor to the Society, and Mr C. W, Armstrong secretary. The Union Bahk of Australia were appointed bankers for the Society. A sub-committee w r as formed to prepare the rules, and submit to a later meeting. It was decided to also issue investment shares of a nominal value of £25, in addition to investment shares of £SO, and capital shares of £lO each. Forms of application for shares will be issued immediately, this being left in the hands of Mr E. P. Cowles, Mr W. J. King, aud the secretary. Various matters for incorporation were discussed. In connection with the death of Sergeant-Major Higginson, as reported in our yesterday’s issue, it is interesting to recall the war record of his family. His eldest son, Mr Scott Higginson, saw service in the ,South African w T ar, and upon the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 he immediately volunteered to serve with the expeditionary force, being granted h commission. He was badly wounded, and will never be fully restored. Two other sons, Nick and Frank, also responded to the call of arms with alacrity, their father, though an old man, shouldering additional burdens in order to release them. Nurse Louie Higginson was no whit behind her brothers in military fervour, for in order to serve she paid her own expenses to England where she was accepted as a nurse and was on the illfated Marquette when the boat was badly hit by a torpedo in the Mediterranean. This is surely a fine record for one family.
