Reform had made a great outcryabout the danger of the "Reds," and had made a great fuss in Christchurch North, declared Mr G. W. Forbes, the Liberal-Labour Whip at Amberley. The partv would not put up a man against Mr Isitt for fear the "Red" candidate would get in. Yet what had happened in Avon in 1919? Where were the 2569 v Reform votes that in 1914 had been cast for Mr Acland?. Mr Sullivan's total had gone up to over 5000, vet Mr Russell's total was about the same. What did the Reformers have to say to that? What had. happened in the Otaki electorate when Mr Masscy was in Opposition? He asked the Reformers to vote, for Mr Robertson (the Labour candidate) to oust the Liberal Ministry. There they had what the Beform" Party had done, yet the Reformers declared it would be an awful thing if the Liberals even looked on the side of the fence on which the "Re'ds" were.-.
Referring to the Labour Party, Mr W. J. Girling, Reform candidate for Wairau, said that there were certain Labour members, such as Mr W. A. Veitch, of Wanganul, Mr S. G. Smith, of New Plymouth, and Mr G. Mitchell, who were among the very best men in the House, as they were broad and sane in their views. He knew Mr Mitchell intimately and had also known Mr Veitch for a long time, and he had a good idea of what their policy was; and he urged that Labour should rally round this class of men. But, when if came to Mr Holland and his party, he could not urge anyone to support them;, because they were extremists, who believed in class legislation.
