STRUCK A REEF
TOTAL LOSS OF A SCHOONER. THE CREW SAFE. (By Telegraph-—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Friday. The auxiliary four-masted schooner Defender is ashore, a total wreck on Mukusocea Reef, in the southern portion of Lau or Ihe Windward group or the Fiji Islands. She is owned in America, and was bound for Levuka with a cargo of 180,000 feet of timber. The Defender struck the reef on April 10th. Within an hour her large )oat had been smashed to matchwood, and three of her four boats had gon" overboard. The crew reached a neighbouring island in a dinghy. News of Ihe vessel's loss came as bad news to Ihe colony, whirl; was quite out of building timber.
