HAMILTON LAW SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting: of the Hamilton Law Society took place in the Law Library yesterday afternoon, Mr H. T. Gillies presiding over a. good attendance of members. Memorial Tablet. It was reported that ihe secretary hart experienced great difficulty in getling a complete list of names for the proposed memorial tablet. The proposal would be carried out by the Council, and it was hoped to have the tablet erected before long. Balance-sheet. The balance-sheet showed the Society to be in a very strong position financially, the amount in the bank being £OOO. President's Report. The president, in his report, stated that during the past year there had been a big increase in membership. Some few months ago the fees bad been increased by the New Zealand Law Society, and'the local council, ! n view of the rise in the cost of living and the increase in salaries of clerks, rents of premises, etc., would have to consider whether fees should not be increased. Mr Gillies referred to oilier matters (reported elsewhere), and impressed upon members the necessity of preserving Ibe ancient and proper etiquette of the profession. He was pleased to say that there had been no complaints brought against practitioners during the past year. Officers. The following officers were appointed for Ibe ensuing year:—President, Mr E. 11. Norlhcrofl (proposed by Mr 11. T. Gillies and seconded by Mr C. L. Mae Diarmid) : vice-president, Mr S. S. Allen: council. Messrs Lewis, A. Swarbrick, C. L. Mae Diarmid, V. H. Luxford, and Hampson; auditor, Mr l\ Gilchrist. Law Library. Mr Strang urged that assistance be given to the more remote districts in the way of libraries. The president said the Society considered il was nol its duty to provide a library for a magistrate. This should be provided by the Department, The Society hoped to build wp a first-class central library, and when thai was established would do what il could lo help the remote places. A vole of thanks to the chairman brought the meeting to a close.
