THE BOROUGH ELECTION.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —It is rather interesting In read from your issue of M;i> lOl.li Hull our ox-Mayur and several ex-< iouncillors have decided io stand again for reelection. Might, I ask what has made these gentlemen change their minds so suddenly? A short, time before the poll on the recent loan proposal, the Mayor stated that he would not be prepared to-carry on if the loan was defeated, and accordingly, as soon as the numbers went uih persuaded six councillors that lie and they would lie doing the right thing by resigning. Now, although Ihe same state of affairs in regard to borough matters as existed at that time is still in being, tic .and five others seek, re-election. It, would seem In the average person that a good deal of trouble and expense could have been saved the borough if those same gentlemen hwd not been so "chickenhearted” over the defeating of their proposal, and our roads and other works would have been much the better for the money which is now wasted in an election. It is to he hoped that these ex-Councillors will not have the opportunity to again waste public money. They now stale that they seek re-election "in order to secure the verdict of the electors on their general policy." Might we not ask, if (hoy were not sure of the wishes of the electors, as indicated by the recent, poll, what right had they as holders of public positions to resign? And if they wore sure and saw (It to resign, what right, have they to ask us to support'them now? Also, is a person who will resign in such a hurry, and has to be forced into welcoming our Prince, a (it man to represent us on any matters whether local oc general? Trusting that an abler pen than mine will lake the matter up, I am, etc., RATEPAYER. Hamilton, May 11, J0?0.
