SEASON'S DAIRY PRODUCE
, WILL GOVERNMENT COMMANDEER? DAIRYMEN UNEASY. OPPOSITION TO COMMANDEER. There is a strong conviction amongst influential dairy people and exporting agents that the Government intends to: again: commandeer dairy produce during the coming season. This feeling was expressed by Mr W. Goodfellow, general manager of the- New Zealand Dairy Company, at a. meeting of the South Auckland Dairy Association at Hamilton yesterday. The speaker bad, lie said, just returned from; Wellington, where he had conferred with various people on the matter, arid: bad formed a general impression amongst exporters that it was the intention of the Government to again' take over the dairy output. Mr- Goodfellow thought that as the Imperial Government had a big- quantity of cheese on hand the Government would not worry too much about this commodity, but he (Mr Goodfellow) would certainly not agree to hand over the butter to ttie Government in future. He thought the butter producers should take up a very definite stand in the matter, and that a meeting should be convened as early as possible, with the object of making some combined definite, stand. The companies should go ahead and arrange their credits and make all other necessary trade arrangements for open market sales.
The meeting was unanimous that any attempt at Government purchase should be combatted, and it was decided to ask the National Dairy Association to call a meeting of dairy representatives to further discuss the matter.
